Microdosing Mastery: A Smart Guide to Safe and Effective Psychedelic Use
Psychedelics are experiencing a revival in the 21st century, often referred to as a "psychedelic renaissance." This resurgence spans various fields such as medicine, therapy, drug development, self-improvement, and spirituality.
The 2023 Psychedelic Science conference in Denver highlighted this trend, drawing 12,000 attendees and featuring diverse viewpoints on psychedelics.
Ironically, I almost made it to this event— my flight was cancelled due to a hailstorm that struck Denver that night. It did in fact led me to spend a five-day second date with my soul mate, which is a story for another day. It’s funny how the universe works its magic.
Interest in psychedelics has grown with increasing public and institutional support. For example, a 2021 survey revealed that 8% of young adults in the US used hallucinogens, up from 3% in 2011.
Governments and venture capitals are investing heavily in psychedelic research now more than ever, with notable developments like Australia's approval of MDMA and psilocybin for PTSD and depression, and Canada's Special Access Program for similar treatments.
Microdosing, the practice of taking very small amounts of psychedelics, has gained popularity for its potential cognitive and psychological benefits.
I have experienced microdosing psilocybin firsthand and I could say that it has definitely helped my ADHD. While scientific research on microdosing is still in its early stages, they are actively being studied by medical professionals in the field of neuroscience and psychology.
While microdoses can in fact cause mild perceptual effects and potentially improve mood and creativity, more studies are being conducted on its impact on depression and anxiety.
This is why it's important to seek the guidance of trained practitioners when thinking about microdosing, rather than attempting it yourself.
Below is a guideline for initiating a sensible microdosing program:
Health Assessment: Evaluate both physical and mental health before starting. Consult with a physician or mental health professional, if possible, as psychedelics can have risks, including potential cardiovascular effects and mental health issues like anxiety. Self-assessment tools can be used if professional help isn’t accessible.
Choosing a Substance: The most commonly microdosed psychedelics are LSD and psilocybin (magic mushrooms). Other substances like MDMA or mescaline are less common. LSD and psilocybin have more research and community support, making them safer options.
Determining Dosage: Start with a very low dose, ideally less than 5-10% of a standard dose. Adjust based on personal sensitivity and desired effects. Accurate measurement is crucial, especially with substances like LSD, which is typically consumed in very small amounts.
Legal Considerations: Psychedelics are largely illegal or restricted, though some areas have decriminalized or regulated their use. Be aware of local laws and consider safer, legal avenues if available.
Storage: Store psychedelics in airtight containers in a cool, dry, and dark place. For long-term storage, refrigerate or freeze, if possible, to maintain potency.
Designing a Protocol: Follow a dosing schedule, such as the Fadiman protocol (one day on, two days off) or the Stamets stack (4-5 days on, 2-3 days off). Customizing the protocol to your needs is important but avoid daily dosing to minimize risks.
Measuring Doses: Use precise measurement tools for accuracy. Psychedelic doses are typically very small, and incorrect dosing can lead to unintended effects.
Tracking Effects: Keep a journal to monitor effects, both positive and negative. This helps gauge how the microdosing affects you and adjust the protocol if needed. Be aware of the placebo effect and subjective nature of psychedelic experiences.
Overall, microdosing should be approached with caution, mindful of legal issues, health risks, and accurate dosing. Monitoring and adjusting your approach based on personal experience and professional advice is crucial for a safe and potentially beneficial microdosing experience.
